Kat DeLuna
By:Pamela Gimenez
Heating up the airwaves With her anticipated album, “9 Lives” dropping August 7th, Kat DeLuna is heating up the radio this summer with her new single “Whine up”. The song features Jamaican dancehall DJ Elephant Man who has collaborated with other artists like Lil Jon' and Mariah Carey. The track fuses pop, techno, house and of course - Spanglish! “Whine up” is not only this year’s summertime jam, it’s the next dance move. With only four days of rehearsal, Kat was ready to shoot her first music video. The video shoot took place on a rooftop overlooking New York City’s skyline. Look out Shakira, you may need some pointers from this next hip-shaker!The 19-year-old Bronx native has been singing since the young age of two. Influenced by both her mother and father, Kat Deluna grew-up listening to many Latina singers from the late 60’s. But it wasn’t always easy. Kat was raised in the Dominican Republic but soon after returned to the States and established her life in Newark, New Jersey. Although money was tight, her mom managed to raise 3 kids and support her daughter’s dreams of making it big. Her musical journey started when she entered a performing arts high school. There was no stopping her and she was determined to train hard, learn, and have fun. Although surprised to learn the program included opera, DeLuna fell in love with opera and now incorporates it into her music. She eventually formed her own girl group called “Coquette,” setting destiny into full force. After one night of fun with friends at a local karaoke contest, Kat from the Bronx not only won, but was sought after by Epic Records. DeLuna was asked to sing a cappella, “I wasn’t trying to impress anybody, I was just trying to sing, do my thing.” An impression was made because soon after Epic signed her on and the rest is history. With much success ahead, Kat keeps it close to home, “What makes me Latina, of course, is mis raices, mi sangre Dominicana, mi cultura. Pero tambien, I would have to say, my attitude, my personality.” And speaking of her culture, Kat went back to the Dominican Republic to shoot her second video for the upcoming single “Dreaming” - you can get a good preview of it on her MySpace page. The song tells a tale of summer love with musical influences from bachata to hip-hop. So what’s next for Kat? She is busy promoting her album, making public appearances and helping to bridge the gap between two culturas.
