College, Make it Happen!A GUIDE FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN Written by: Moises You might just be a freshman, but you should already be preparing for college.  It’s never too early to start planning.  Just because you are “just” starting high school does not mean that you are off the hook. There are many steps to take in preparation for the big decision: choosing the best college for you. As a freshman you will need to get on the right path as soon as possible. It will be important to pick classes based on how they will help you when you are applying for college, not on how easy they are. All colleges and universities have different entrance requirements. This means that each school sets their own rules as to how many years of each subject you must take in high school. For example, most four-year colleges and universities require at least four years of English, three years of math, two years of science, and at least one year of a foreign language.

Take the classes that are required by the colleges you interested in attending. Your high school’s requirements to graduate might be different than those for colleges you’d like to attend. Talk to your high school college counselor to find out the exact requirements for colleges that interest you. You don’t want to get through high school only to find you didn’t take enough math classes and must take summer school! High school is a time for change. You will be making new friends and meeting new teachers. Your after-school activities are going to be more important than they were in middle school. Colleges are going to look at what you did outside of school. If you play a sport, think about playing for your school. Get involved in the speech team or any other program your school offers that you find interesting. Colleges won’t look at how many home runs you hit, but rather that you were involved. They will factor your extracurricular activities with your academic accomplishments. Push yourself when it comes to your schoolwork. Making the grade your next four years may mean that you could go to college for free. How? Colleges award a lot of money to students who get good grades in high school, participate in activities outside of school and are good community members.   Make the most out of your high school years. Get involved and get good grades. Always think about college.  Think about meeting college admission requirements.  Think about scholarships. Think about your future!
