Chicas, Go Tell Your Mama!! The Truth about Heart Disease Written by Christina L. Alvarado New York’s Fashion Week 2008 is a wrap. Q: What social issue combines fashion, health and more importantly what health risks Latinas have? A: The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection and Fashion Show 2008! This social event addresses social awareness for women and heart disease the #1 killer among women. This social campaign was started by First Lady Laura Bush in 2002. The Red Dress Collection debuts every spring in New York. This year, The Heart Truth brought together the industry’s top designers such as Angel Sanchez, Donna Karan, and Michael Kors. The collaboration between designers and celebrity models, such as Heidi Klum and Rita Moreno, has helped bring this issue to the forefront of medical concerns among all women--but Latinas in particular. The focus for us Latinas should be to direct the younger generations who have access to knowledge and technology to educate our mamas and abuelitas to have their corazones checked annually by their physician. Education is important! According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 57% of women are now aware that this disease is the #1 killer of women--up from 34% in 2000. This fight for knowledge is now stronger than ever. And before your abuelita makes more tamales and tortillas, ask if she knows that leading a healthy lifestyle will keep her healthy with a decreasing risk of heart disease by 82% in addition to fighting diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. The Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Red Dress, introduced by the NHLBI in 2002, is the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness |
