CHICAGIRLS, TAKE A LEAD By Tristan Christopher Robin A ChicaGirl’s vote is vital for a healthy community. Young Latinas are under-represented in the media, the White House and America. It is imperative to reach beyond the ballot and further than the government. Essentially, a politician lies dormant in all of us, but her sphere of influence resides in your purse. I am speaking of the almighty dollar. In our capitalistic society, money talks! Collectively, your hard earned cash has the power to move mountains. Enhancing a ChicaGirls future is a solid investment. Without your best interest in mind, large commercial corporations have vigorously researched your culture and heritage in hopes to reach your wallet and grab hold of your expendable income. The fortitude of a ChicaGirl lifestyle, past and present, presented quite a challenge for these mega companies. Yet, through relentless targeted marketing, trends show that ChicaGirls are forking over more dollars than ever to huge mega wealthy businesses, also known as “The Man.” The most significant increase in spending is in the fashion sector. Big fashion manufacturers progressively seek overseas production, securing grossly large profits and faster output. Unfortunately, this hyper-movement is proving to be disastrous to workers rights, our Latin neighbors, and home grown talent. Let’s get more bang for our bucks by making a conscious decision to buy North American, Mexican, Central and South American fashion gear. Curbing the tide of manufacturing and production back home and to our neighbors south of the border will directly impact our communities’ wellness in so many positive ways. Making this commitment for ourselves will encourage economic growth, an influx of opportunity, and most importantly the rise in the quality of living locally and in Latin America. ChicaGirls represent an integral part of this nation. Next time you are shopping online or at the mall, think of it as visiting the poll booth. When it comes time to hand over your cash, visualize yourself casting a vote. Take lead and support your local designer, manufacturer…invest in you!
