1st Generation College Graduate
I am a first generation college graduate. My diploma is a product of patience, persistence and a lot of hard work. My accomplishments have not come easy, but if I’ve done it— so can you!
These days, attending college is a necessity. It’s also one of the best investments you can make toward your future. According to the Census Bureau, a college graduate will earn nearly one-million dollars more over the course of their lifetime, than a non-graduate. College graduates are more likely to enjoy increased professional mobility and an improved quality of life for their children. Take it from me… college pays!
College has enabled me to expand my knowledge, express my ideas, develop character, and grow as an individual. It is important to find the college that best suits you and allows you to grow into a successful young woman.
College may seem impossible because it can be expensive, but this is not true. Financial aid is available to all students who qualify and college counselors are ready and willing to assist students through the process. Being the first to attend college in my family, I relied on counselors and financial aid websites to gather information about loans, scholarships, grants, and special programs. One in particular, the Texas B-On-Time Loan, offers loan-forgiveness once a student graduates within four calendar years of enrollment and with a 3.0 GPA or above. There are many forms of aid available; all it takes is some research and willingness to ask for help.
College can be for everyone. You don’t need to be the genius, the most outgoing, or even the wealthiest—all it takes is the desire to reach your full potential. You too can be a pioneer in your own way, as I did by furthering my education. I encourage each of you to pursue your dreams, be ambitious, and don’t give up!
