I AM, therefore I LEAD; the 21st Century Latino Written by: Luis G. González I am born out of an explosion of ingenuity, strength, community, vision, respect and family… I am a member of an international community of 565 million thinkers, poets and artists that spans across continents and leaps between oceans…and therefore, I am American not because I belong to one country, but because I belong to many…I belong to the Americas… I am not defined by labels, political terms, or popular conceptions of what it means to lead or “live the good life”… Rather… I define my OWN world that I CHOOSE to live in…I do this because no better person understands who I am, and who my community is than myself, and my community… I use my imagination to dream new ideas into existence…And as a result, I create my own rules, on my own terms… I know that my family is the spring board for my outlook on life… I am positively shaping a new model of leadership…I am doing this because respect, love for family, faith for something bigger than myself and an understanding of the complexity and richness of my diverse community allows me to do so… And not only am I redefining what it means to be a leader, I’m also positively shaping what it means to be a contributing citizen of the world… I am my community, and my community is in my every action, breath and choice… I collaborate with people because I see value in the talents of others to come up with their own conclusions… I love people because they inspire me, as much as I inspire them… I am powerful and humble, because my parents showed me that these two characteristics do not have to be contrary to the other… I enjoy sitting around the table with loved ones long after I have finished eating because I greatly cherish conversations with my family and friends… I know I must continue to get to know my family, as there is always much more to discover…I realize that they are my greatest source of friendship, inspiration and knowledge… I see the possibilities in every situation, because my imagination affords me this gift… I appreciate every moment of the day, because I understand the beauty of the present and its implications on the future… I write because I have much to share with the world… I am bilingual and bicultural…and because of this I can live in any country, thrive in any environment, and impact anything around me…I do this because I am resourceful, creative and skillful… I see no boundaries geographically or intellectually…I am international because my community is international… I am a composer, not only because I make music, but because I create art in all aspects of my life with my heart, my hands and my creativity… I am building wealth not only economically for my community, but I am establishing a wealth of culture, knowledge and community development… I am part of a community that is self-sustaining and self-defining… I will not die, because my goodness, my compassion, my vision will live in my children and all those individuals I came across in my life... I do not look back, because I know I am only as good as what I do today…and for this reason, I am forward thinking and vision driven… I design, I create, I shape, I build…I am an architect of my life… I am an owner because I believe, think and understand that the world I live in is my playground to share and craft with those that wish to be owners with me… I am fearless because healthy risks are a part of my nature… I DREAM while I’m awake because it affords me the brushes I need to paint my future… I CREATE with great intensity because the passion of my mother shows me that greatness is achieved through our actions and heart… I INNOVATE new ideas because I’ve spent my whole life in discussion with my family on how to plan, implement and shape distinct thought… I LEAD because it is not something that I learned, but rather something that was born in me… “DREAM…CREATE…INNOVATE…LEAD.”… It is the code of poets…it is the code of my life… …it is who WE are… |
