ChicaGirl Application 1. Brittany Valadez 7. Hispanic/Latina/Latino 9. GPA: 3.72 12. University of the Incarnate Word. Palo Alto-Summer School 2008 13. Professionally, my goal is to become a syndicated journalist in the world of entertainment news. Ever since I can remember, I have enjoyed television shows such as Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, and the Daily 10 on the E! Channel. My favorite TV stations are MTV, the Style Network, E! and broadcast channels. It was a natural decision for me to choose that fields. Also, I love to chat. Yet sometimes, I can be very shy. I have not let it hold me back from doing what I want to do. Voice is an important part of television journalism. Yet voice is where I encounter problems. My voice is a higher pitch, and I have a tendency to speak too fast. For a while, I started getting discouraged, thinking that somebody more confident would come along and take my job in the future. It took encouragement from un unlikely source for me to realize that I can reach my dreams. This past spring, while interning at News 4 WOAI, a l 14. Motivational Story Although I am sometimes shy, I am also a girl who motivates herself to get to where she wants. In both high school and college, I have taken the initiative in everything I do. 2007. That year, our senior class was behind on the monies needed to fund our senior prom. In March, just a little over a month before our prom, I had an idea. I knew it was a long shot, but I ignored any feelings I had telling me “no.” Fashion is my passion, so what better way to raise money than to put on a fashion show? In one month, I was able to borrow dresses from Jessica McClintock, Tuxedos from Al’s Formal Wear, and Rex’s Formal Wear, and clothes from A’gaci. For the hungry and exhausted cast and crew, pizza was donated by one of the fathers and Bill Miller donated brownies. Most importantly, the fashion show was a huge success! We raised somewhere between $700 and $800. Our senior class wasn’t even planning a senior trip. After that fundraiser, we were able to have a lock-in at the Incredible Pizza Company, with no one paying a penny out of their pocket. Also, with the money raised from the show, a class flower was purchased to present each student at graduation. With my faith in God and faith in myself, my vision came true. With the help and moral support of the participants, my family and friends, my dream evolved into a reality. It took one idea, one goal and many people to achieve one dream. When A’gaci allowed us to use their clothes, I was ecstatic. Ever since the store came into existence, I wanted to work there. I vowed that my first job would be at A’gaci—or I wasn’t going to work! After the fashion show, I was asked the greatest question; I was asked if I wanted to work for the company. The Lord blessed me through these turn of events. Not only did He bless me, but He blessed everyone who graduated in the Highlands High School Senior Class of 2007. The following summer, the Lord continued to watch over me. I was privileged to be a part of an intense two week journalism workshop, sponsored by the Express News and the Dow Jones. I had my first real taste of what it was like to be a journalist. It was difficult, and many times I wanted to quit. It was not until completion of the program that I realized how much I grew, and how much I learned. We had an editor of a newspaper come and speak to our group. He critiqued our articles and told us what to expect in college regarding internships. He said that there was no way we would get an internship in any major market. He said internships were usually reserved for college juniors and seniors, and only If they had previous experience. The fall of my freshmen year of college, I did not pursue any internship, as I was just getting settled. Spring semester of college came and I noticed a flyer looking for interns for a modeling agency. I called and received an interview the following week, where I was hired on the spot! That internship led to another internship. I interviewed and was hired; again, on the spot! I remembered what that newspaper editor told us in the summer, and it was then that I realized that hard work is what gets you the job, not your age. Oh, did I forget to mention where I was hired? I was hired as an intern for News 4 WOAI’s San Antonio Living Show. I was hired for a television station…in a major market. This past semester, I not only interned again at News 4 again—this time for the news department, but I also became a ChicaGirl Intern! I am only a sophomore, and I have already had four internships. Nothing’s stopping me now. My field is competitive, but heart is driven. I can, and will, succeed. |
