MARISA C: SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY I am four years old. My cousin and I are playing in the bathroom preparing to take a bubble bath. I watch the bubbles float up high to the ceiling and pop. I am suddenly struck with artistic inspiration. The bathroom walls become my canvases. I smear soap on the walls and drizzle shampoo in the corners. My cousin and I sprinkle baby powder over the walls for added effect. I am six years old. The sun is shining brightly. I am beaming with happiness as I squint into the distance at my new pony. My grandfather says he will teach me how to ride properly, but I must first wait to get a saddle. I am determined to have my first lesson that day as planned. After much pleading and negotiating, I mount the horse bareback and learn how to ride “Indian style.” So, you see, ever since I was a little girl I knew I was destined to do great things. Everything I did was not average or ordinary, but extraordinary. Finally the time came when I graduated from Incarnate Word High School. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world but was unsure of just how to do it, so I entered a local community college. However, I soon began to lose momentum and became less interested in college. I was also losing my vision to do great things…to be extraordinary. It wasn’t until I became associated with CHICA Girl Magazine that my vision of my future became more concrete. I realized I had come too far to let a great educational opportunity pass me by. With my internship at CHICA Girl Magazine, I learned the benefits of helping others as well as vital business skills. It soon became clear to me that this was my passion. I continued to further my education through the CHICA Girl/UIW Scholarship fund and I reached my goal and graduated with honors this May 2009. Through these organizations I have received the education, support, and reassurance to remember that I will accomplish great things. I try to apply this principle in all my daily activities by setting goals that increase my maximum output from the previous day. I concentrate on the end results and benefits to keep my mind motivated. This ultimately conditions me to work “smarter.” My internship with CHICA Girl Magazine has allowed me to work with men and women from diverse backgrounds and cultures—and I know this will be a vital asset while attaining my future goals. I am fully aware of what I am capable of achieving. I am confident. My ambition, creativity, and innovative thinking will bring me nothing less than success. With the realization of my new talents, I have again grown from ordinary to extraordinary. And I know again… I am destined to do great things. |
