Thank You…an update from Brittany Valadez

I want to express my deep gratitude for being selected as a scholarship recipient. I am so thankful. My parents have sacrificed so much to help me be where I am today, and I always wanted to make sure that they didn’t have to pay for the majority of my college education. Thankfully, I had parents who taught me the value of an education from when I was young. Therefore, I have always strived to do my best.

My junior year of high school, I transferred to a public school from years at a Christian school. When I was registering, I knew I wanted to take AP classes in English and History. The counselor doubted that I could succeed, but I had faith that God would help me. Students who signed up for the course would usually drop it soon after. I told her I was up for the challenge. The teacher, Mrs. Archer, was excellent. I studied two hours for her class every night, and when it came time for the AP exams, I studied an extra three hours. Not only did I pass the class with A’s every semester, but I passed the AP exam too. I knew the better I did in my classes, the more I could help my parents pay for college. I worked hard to receive AP credits to help my parents cut the cost of paying for extra classes. Good grades also helped me earn several scholarships as well. Once in college, I maintained my desire to succeed. I was on the Dean’s list, involved in several organizations, and took on several internships to pursue my career in broadcast journalism.

Girls, I hope that I stressed the importance of school for you. Education does not end with a high school diploma. If you want a true career, you need to have a college education. Since when was too much knowledge a bad thing? Potential hires are always looking for the one with a strong college education and experience in the field. So a combination of internships and school is all you need.

Don’t give up.  Never give up.
