My name is Nora Taylor.  I am a junior at the University of the Incarnate Word, with a double major in Banking and Finance, and Economics.  I will be graduating in the near future, but graduating from college almost never happened.  After high school, I foolishly thought that I was not college material and that college was too expensive.  I decided to enter the workforce.  However, without a degree, it was very difficult to get a job that paid well and that I enjoyed.  I previously attended San Antonio College but did not really focus, I kept changing my major.  It was not until my first semester at the University of the Incarnate Word that my desire for knowledge was fully realized. My professors ignited a spark that has propelled me to further my academic career.  They inspired me—and I wanted to continue spreading the light of the value of education by teaching future students.
One of the greatest achievements during my undergraduate studies was being accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program.   I have been fortunate to have conducted two research projects.  These projects allowed me to prepare for the research I will do in graduate school as I pursue my doctorate.  I was honored to have presented one project at the 22nd annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research, in Salisbury, Maryland.
My current goals are to challenge myself academically; I want to make the Dean’s List every semester until I graduate while continuing to grow in my faith and maintaining a close relationship with God.  As far as my long term goals are concerned, I want to obtain my doctoral degree in Business with a concentration in Economics.  I would like to continue research on Hispanic entrepreneurs and assist with the local creation of a non-profit that focuses on financial education for low income families.
I am truly grateful for the scholarship that CHICA GIRL magazine has awarded me.  With this scholarship I will be able to continue my dream of obtaining my degree from the University of the Incarnate Word.
